母語の悲しい

シンガポールに住んでいるもう半年に渡った、どんどんシンガポールの生活に慣れます。

だが、そこである悲しい点が気がつきます。

それは、大部のシンガポール中国系の人は母語が話しません。

中国系の人は中国語が話しません。

もし日本人は日本語が話さないなら、それはとても大変なことでしょう？

そうじゃなくて、ここの人は母語が話さない事が全然恥ずかしくありません。それより、皆はそう言う事が誇っています。

英語がぺらぺら喋られるが、母語が全然だめです。

そして、もう一組の人は母語が話せますが、話したくありません。だって、母語を話すのはとても恥ずかしい！品がない！

可笑しいでしょう？！

可笑しいより、悲しいの法が適当です。

顔や皮膚色や外見は中国系の人ですが、母語が殆ど話せません。

英語しか流暢に話さないが、欧米人ではありません。

それでもない、あれでもない。

そうしたら、どんな根源もありません。

とても悲しいです…

It had been staying in Singapore for the past 6 months, and, I’m starting to get use of the life here.

Nonetheless, there’s one point that I find it dismal.

That is the fact that Singapore Chinese can’t speak their own mother tongue.

Chinese can’t speak Mandarin.

If it happens that Japanese can’t speak Japanese, isn’t it a big issue?

Not only that, people don’t here don’t feel ashamed that they can’t speak their mother tongue. Instead, they even proud of the fact that they can’t speak it.

They can speak fluent English, but not Mandarin.

And then there’s another group of people which can speak Mandarin, but refuse to use it. Why? Because it is embarrassing!  No class at all!  

Isn’t that funny?

To be honest, I felt sad instead.

Their features, skin colours and outer appearance display them as Chinese; however, they can’t speak their own mother tongue.

Speaks eloquent English; but, neither a Westerner.

This isn’t this. That isn’t that.

This is just despairing…
